Business Ideas
Businesses live and die by the quality of business ideas that they produce. For a business to be truly successful in the long run, it needs to continually change and grow and without fresh quality business ideas, a business stagnates and dies. For at least the past 100 years businesses have been organized on the top down hierarchical model often imitating the military in its rigid structure and insistence on everyone adhering to the chain of command. The brain trust was at the top. Usually a small group of senior executives who had a monopoly on power and held the view, all good business ideas came from the top and then were executed by those beneath them. This top-down method of business ideas worked better in the past than it does now and even then this view of where the business idea should come from only worked if those at the top were exceptionally gifted which usually wasn't the case. Business ideas should come from all levels of the organization. In order for business ideas to be truly workable they need to come from the people who are really in touch with customers and who are truly plugged into the marketplace. Business idea should not be coming from those at the top who are working from outdated assumptions and knowledge that has long outlived its usefulness. Business ideas need to be fresh and sometimes revolutionary and those at the top are incapable of coming up with fresh, revolutionary business ideas. In order for a company to produce the business ideas necessary for success today and tomorrow, the leaders of the top need to stop thinking of themselves as the sole source of creative and worthwhile business ideas and they need to empower everyone throughout their organization to contribute ideas and to participate in steering the company to greater success through those ideas. Of course this will take more than the obligatory suggestion box. To get the truly great business ideas and almost anyone in the organization can come up with, those of the top need to begin to think of themselves as the editors of the business not the managers. Sure, someone has to have the final say, but it needs to be a much more bottom up free-flowing process in order for a truly creative business idea to see the light of day. A business runs on its ideas and fresh business ideas can mean the difference of running on empty or running into the winner's circle.
