Most people are at least somewhat familiar with the early virtual pets like Tomagotchi and Furbee. These hand held virtual pets were a big sensation when they first became widespread. A lot of people felt that they could teach a child about responsibility so that they were a good thing. Many many children adopted these virtual pets and were really caught up in their care. Some schools ha to go so far as banning these virtual pets from school as the teachers felt that they were distracting the students during class. But many students felt that since the very life of their virtual pet was at stake, they should be allowed to bring their virtual pets to school and care for them during class. In some schools the battle still goes on but luckily, for general education's sake, the craze has died down. The handheld virtual pets are still around, but they have been superseded by the online virtual pets.

There are many online websites where you can create or adopt virtual pets. Many of these sites are geared toward children and are quite fanciful. ONline virtual pets can be realistic pet simulations or fantasy characters. But all virtual pets need care and require that, at the very least their basic needs for food, water and shelter be met for them to stay alive.

Online virtual pets can play games and have adventures. These virtual pets usually amass health or happiness points if their owner takes good care of them. At this basic level, it does seem that virtual pets can teach children something about the responsibility of caring for a pet and just might be useful in that respect. A more adult version of virtual pets exists online also. These virtual pet sites are far more sophisticated and require a lot of study in order to participate successfully. These virtual pet sites are like the fantasy sports leagues in that you manage a stable of race horses or a kennel of showdogs. You guide your virtual pets through training and breeding in order to create champions who can win races or shows. You still need to care for the basic needs of these virtual pets and then some. These virtual pet simulations can get pretty involved and be quite time consuming, but if you like virtual pets, you can have a lot of fun.
