Team Sports
There are many team sports. Team sports are differentiated from other sport in that in team sports you need the cooperation of a number of other people in order to play the sport. Team sports can involve small teams and team sports can involve large teams. Some team sports are organized into leagues and some team sports are played just on a pick up basis among friends. Participating in team sports can teach you a lot of valuable lessons. It is often considered quite important in the education of children that they participate in team sports. It is thought that participation in team sports by children is a positive and formative experience. It is suggested that participation in team sports will teach a child about cooperation and what is called teamwork. It is supposed to be a valuable lesson that there are certain things that you just can't do alone and so you must work as a team. This can be a valuable insight for a child to have and an important realization that maturity brings, but so often team sports are all about competition, not cooperation. Usually, in team sports there is even a fair amount of unhealthy competition with the team itself. In team sports, all energy and aggression is not focused on beating the external competition, but often in team sports, there is a lot of rivalry with the team and a lot of hierarchy too. In team sports, the more talented players and the coach's favorites get all the praise and privileges and the lesser members of the team get treated badly. Team sports can be one big lesson in cruelty and favoritism for children. Also, focusing on the external competition in team sports can be a negative experience for a child. In team sports, some coaches are so focused on winning that they don't stop to see the damage that they are doing by driving a bunch of children so hard to be winners. Of course, in team sports, in order to be winners, you have to make someone else losers. And sometimes in team sports, it doesn't matter to the coaches what has to be done to make sure it is the other team that are the losers. What kind of positive lesson does this type of team sport teach you? you may ask. Well, I don't believe this type of team sport does teach children any positive lessons. If team sports can truly be made about cooperation and equality, then team sports would be able to help in the formation of quality adults. Team sports should be focused on positive character development and fun. So much of team sports is not fun and sometimes the pressure to excel and to win is tremendous. Team sports do not teach a child anything, but fear and self loathing when an adult coach stands there screaming at a child for making a mistake.
