Cold Weather Diet

In some ways, a cold weather diet is very similar to a healthy diet for any climate. There are some areas, however, which might be emphasized in this diet to better assist the body to deal with cold temperatures. Taken to the extreme, the diet of peoples living at or near the arctic circle has typically differed drastically from the diet of peoples in temperate or tropical regions. In part this is due to the availability, or lack thereof, of certain foods. Obviously the Eskimo people do not have an abundance of home grown garden vegetables to use in their diet. Today, of course, many types of foods are available through modern transport methods and the ability to preserve foods to supplement local diets.

While it is important for people in any area to have adequate proteins, starches, vitamins and minerals in their diet, it is also important for people in extreme climates to have a greater supply of fats in their diet which help to insulate the body from the cold. Even in temperate zones, people typically modify their diets somewhat during cold winters. A rich pot of stew containing meat, potatoes and both green and yellow vegetables is a nourishing diet when one is going out to battle snow and cold. Such food provides extra energy and nutrients in the diet needed for activity in cold weather. Conversely, one might much prefer, and feel better with, a light but nutritious salad on a hot summer day.

If one listens to one's body, as well as being nutritionally informed, it will be natural to modify a diet to respond to the body's needs. In cold weather, warming foods providing extra energy are a natural response to the environment and should be included in the diet. More fat can be consumed, slightly richer foods, though in all climates sugar should be minimized in a healthy diet. Though more food may be consumed during cold weather, one needs to be careful to control the diet to avoid weight gain, modifying the diet only to meet whatever extra energy is needed to function in a cold weather environment.

In cold weather, it is also very comforting and warming to come indoors to a hot drink, and this might vary in the diet from tea to hot cider to coffee or hot chocolate. Any of these will provide a welcome warming touch to a cold weather diet. Enjoy the richer foods of a cold weather diet...but exercise good judgment in terms of maintaining a healthy diet under any circumstance.
