Defining Diet
There are two basic definitions to "diet". First, your diet is simply what you eat, day in, day out. It may vary a lot or a little, depending upon individual tastes. You may eat a fairly simple, not very varied diet...you may include in your diet exotic foods and recipes, or you may be on a special diet, such as a diabetic diet. At any rate, your diet includes the foods you eat and the beverages you drink on a regular basis. The other definition of diet is that of "going on" a special diet, usually to lose weight. In this case the diet has an objective other than simple nourishment. In the case of a weight-loss diet, there may be very specific conditions as to type of foods and amounts and frequency of eating. There are a multitude of weight loss diets, and a number of companies who profit well from preparing specific foods and meals especially for weight loss purposes. When we are talking of the term "diet" relative to food and drink intake for simple nourishment and enjoyment, it encompasses every food and beverage on the planet, and may vary widely according to location, ethnicity and personal preferences. In the tropics, for instance, a regular diet will include the foods grown in the region. In the Caribbean, for instance, the average diet will include foods such as bread plant, plantain, papaya, nuts and avocado, as these are plentiful on the islands. In places like Grenada, famous for its spices, these spices will be regularly used in food preparation. In environments where seasons range from hot summer to cold winter, diets will vary by season, as the average body requires heavier food, more carbohydrates and fats to maintain itself in cold weather than in hot climates. Within a country, as in the US, where climates and local food traditions vary, diet may vary considerably. A typical midwestern diet will be quite different from, say, a coastal city. In the former, more beef and pork and potatoes and gravy will be eaten, whereas along the coast fish and shellfish are more prevalent in the typical diet. Whether for regular, normal nourishment and enjoyment, or for specific medical or weight control purposes, one's diet usually includes some form of meat, poultry or fish on a regular basis (with the exception of course of vegetarian diet) a variety of vegetables, fruits and grain. The other definition of diet, meaning "to diet" for weight control will have more specific types and quantities of food.
