Physical Therapy for Tennis Elbow


What is physical therapy?

Physical Therapy is a health care specialty involved with diagnosing, evaluating and treating disorders of the musculoskeletal system. The reason of physical therapy is to restore maximal functional independence to each patient. Physical Therapists who are licensed health care professionals with a doctorate degree in physical therapy provide this therapy. Physical Therapy is prescribed by a physician to apply diathermy or ultrasound to the inflamed site. The physician may also prescribe nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce inflammation and pain. Exercise becomes very important to improve flexibility to all forearm muscles and will aid in decreasing muscle and tendon tightness.

Types of Physical Therapy

There are different types of physical therapies that can be recommended by the therapist. Some of them are as follows:

* Learning of new techniques and using different equipments to help prevent further injury.

* Applying Ultrasound over the affected area under therapist’s supervision. In this theory, blood flow is increased by the deep heat which decreases pain and muscle spasms.

* Electrical stimulation. This theory involves in a mild electrical current that travels through electrodes placed at nerve trigger points.

* Massage over an inflamed area. This may reduce the formation of scar tissue and help the new blood vessels grow in the damaged tissue.

* Manual therapy. In this therapy only hands are used to cause relaxation, increase flexibility and decrease pain. This therapy also includes treatment to position joints and bones. Therapist uses slow and careful movements to twist, pull or push bones and joints into its position

Specialty Areas for Physical Therapy

There are five common specialty areas in physical therapy they are Orthopedic, Geriatric, Neurological, Pediatric, Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.

* Orthopedic: - Orthopedic physical therapists diagnose, manage and treat disorders and injuries of the musculoskeletal system. Patients suffering with disease affecting the muscles, bones, ligaments or tendons of the body will benefit form this therapy.

* Geriatric: - This therapy covers a wide area of issues concerning people as they go through adult aging, but is usually focused on the older adult. Geriatric therapy helps those affected by Arthritis, Osteoporosis, Cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, Hip and Joint replacement and many more.

* Neurological: - This therapy is a discipline focused on working with individuals who have a neurological disorder. Therapists work with patients to improve areas of Dysfunction.

* Pediatric: - This therapy assists in early detection of health problems and uses a wide variety of modalities to treat disorders in the pediatric population. Children with development delays, cerebral palsy, and spina bifida are few of the patients treated with this therapy.

* Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation: - with this therapy wide variety of patients with cardiopulmonary disorders are treated. Heart Attack, Post coronary bypass surgery, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are some of the patients who benefit with this therapy.
