Sports Contracts
It seems you can't read the news these days without reading something about sports contracts. Today's professional athlete is a highly paid and very well compensated in other ways too. But, of course, enough is never enough and so big name players are always renegotiating their sports contracts. They have a good year and think that entitles them to a better compensation package so they have their agents and their lawyers start renegotiating their sports contracts. Some big name sports players even have enough bargaining power when first negotiating their sports contracts that they can have renegotiating clauses and opt out clauses built right into their sports contracts. Sow when is enough enough? Does a player need fifty million dollars a year? isn't forty million dollars a year enough? How can sports teams meet the terms of these sports contracts? Is there really that much money to be made from owning a major market sports team that you can negotiate this ludicrous sports contract and pay out this kind of money to your players? I am sure sports contracts have gotten more complex over the years with all the agents, managers, lawyers, and representatives the big name players have handling their sports contracts. What was probably, at one time a handshake deal is now a forty page sports contract document with addendums and special clauses and all sorts of complex compensation schemes involved. Sports contracts are now so complex that there is a whole legal specialty that deals exclusively with sports contracts. I am sure there are courses at most of the major law schools that deal exclusively with sports contracts. An attorney today who specializes in sports contracts can make quite a fine living if the sports figures he represents are all getting paid through multi million dollar a year sports contracts. Obviously, sports contracts are quite a gravy train judging by how many people are involved just on the player's side of negotiating a sports contract. And that doesn't even take into account the army of lawyers and managers and negotiators that the teams employ just to deal with sports contracts. It is amazing that any playing gets done when you consider the time and effort spent on sports contracts. I guess we should be glad that the players have any energy left for sports when so much of their time is spent on negotiating and renegotiating sports contracts. But I guess in this era of sports as big business, sports contracts are a necessary evil.
