Facebook And Privacy Concerns
As is the case of any other social networking site, Facebook also faces some concerns about its privacy policy etc. There have been concerns regarding the use of this site for surveillance and data mining. Some Privacy Concerns Of Facebook: As it’s stated in its privacy agreement that: “We may use information about you, including newspapers, internet etc…..to supplement your profile”. Some features like campus newspaper monitoring, AIM away-message harvesting have been dropped from Facebook. The site has also assured the users that in the next agreement, there won’t be a clause about information collection and assured that the data is not used for data-mining purpose. Some concerns have also been raised regarding security of third party applications that users may install on the site. Facebook cannot see or control Platform developers. It doesn’t have the access to restrict the third party applications from getting the user data. Also Facebook staff has the authority to view profiles if they suspect a user is violating some terms and conditions. Take Precautions From Your Side: If you are a Facebook user, though it is a great site to connect to your friends worldwide, it’s also important for you to guard against misuse of your data. You must take several precautions to protect your privacy online: Setting: Click on the privacy settings on your profile and check out the privacy buttons. You must keep your address and e-mail id private. Also if you stay in a hostel or dorm, keep your room number as private. Photos: If you have photos uploaded or tagged by others which are inappropriate, then make them private and remove tags from them. In Facebook, anyone can see those photos and misuse them. If the photos show illegal activities, underage drinking or smoking, sexually exploitable stuff, then make sure to make them private in the settings. This might harm you in future in terms of job, internship or even relationships. Blocking people: If you feel someone is not qualified to see your profile, or has posted some explicit messages on your wall, you can block that person. Facebook is for social interaction, not for invading one’s privacy, so don’t be afraid to block people from viewing your profile. The terms and conditions of privacy on Facebook are not clearly defined, thus have lately come under a scanner. The site has already removed some clauses from its privacy agreement and intends to make even more changes to make it a safer place for people to keep in touch. As a user though, you must use the privacy features and settings and also respect others’ privacy. Don’t post obscene messages or things which may hurt someone’s feelings. Facebook is a friendly platform meant to unite friends and create a stronger community. Let us help it remain safe and secure for all.
