Facebook And The Rise Of Social Networking
If we look at it more closely, we can easily classify Internet Era into several interesting phases. It all began with the dot com boom way back in the 90’s when the domain name was considered to be the most important aspect of a website. Then came web 2.0 and it can be called as the most refreshing change that has happened to the internet. One of the most significant aspects of web 2.0 has been the rise of social networking. Today, social networking websites are the hub for socio-cultural gatherings. Some of the most visited websites in the world are social networking websites. Of all the websites, none have gained as much popularity in recent times as Facebook. The Origin It all started when Mark Zuckerberg started a website which would allow the students of Harvard University to communicate and exchange information. The website became quite popular and then very soon the other universities in the Boston area were added to the network. Over the next year, Facebook grew at the rate of noughts and several universities and institutions from around the world joined in. Soon the criteria for joining changed and anyone with a university or school email address could join the network. At present ‘Facebook’ has more than 42 million active users from around the world. It has replaced Flickr as the number one photo site in the US and there are more than 8.5 million photos uploaded every day on Facebook. Free For All As of today, Facebook is free for users from around the world. It generates its revenue primarily from banner advertising. There are some sponsored groups as well that bring in the revenue. The revenue of Facebook has always been a subject of interest for experts. Way back in June 2006, the revenue was rumored to be somewhere around $1.5 million a week. Facebook is the 7th most visited site in the United States. A lot of features make Facebook a safer place than some of the other popular social networking sites. The Features A user who signs up with Facebook is able to create a profile of his with pictures. This profile can only be viewed by confirmed friends or by members of the same group or community. This feature alone has put it way ahead from the competition. While other social networking sites had security concerns and issues like pedophilia were rampant, Facebook has been a sole exception. However, like everything popular, Facebook has its own set of critics. The longetivity and the recent issue with the News Feed feature that the website launched has now sparked a new interest amongst critics who are leaving no stone unturned to malign the website. But is social networking and Facebook here to stay for long? Only time will be able to tell us that.
