Facebook Challenges MySpace
Facebook is said to be the number two most popular social networking in the whole World Wide Web today. But it has made the most tremendous improvements and membership increase last year. It wouldn’t be big a surprise if it dislodges MySpace from its number one spot. Why MySpace Should Watch Out For Facebook According to Media Metrix, Facebook posted a resounding 143% increase of members in May 2007. This is largely a result of its decision to welcome others and not just those who had university email addresses and select businesses. It also made a move to invite everybody and anybody into the community. It certainly made a great improvement in the rate of its increase from May of 2006 when it posted a then very good increase of 121%. Since its big decision in September of 2006, Facebook recruited to its site more members. They were mostly web surfers aging 25 years old to 35 years. The increase in this age group posted a whopping 181% increase. This is rightly so since they were the ones most benefited from the big move Facebook has undertaken. The late teens to early twenties set, however, only posted a 38% increase. This should be expected since most young adults were assumed to be members since their college days already. There are fewer of them to tap now than the older set. But it was not only the older adults who have flooded the site. Young teens aging from 12 years old to 17 years old have also decided to take advantage of Facebook and so Facebook registered an increase of 149%. Another achievement Facebook has made during the last two quarters of 2006 till the month of May of 2007 is that in February its members have been observed to stay logged in much longer. They have stayed logged in for as much as two hundred minutes during this period. This only means that Facebook haven’t just gained more members. Its members, old and new, have also liked what they were seeing to keep them on the site for longer hours. With this influx of new users, the composition of Facebook membership has demographically evened out. It is no longer limited to just one age group. Each age group is now represented in this social network. Having achieved this, it is expected that even more web surfers will join the site. More and more of your friends will go to Facebook. More and more connections and networks will be created. This will further strengthen the Facebook connection. And one of these days, Facebook could just find itself, not behind MySpace, but leading it from front.
