The Secret Behind Facebook’s Popularity
Man is a social animal, and Facebook satisfies his desire to relate with people - online. In today’s fast paced world, for most people, the sole means of connecting with their friends, classmates and colleagues is fast becoming Facebook. Social networking or social ‘utility’ as the promoters of Facebook call it, is a fast growing means of keeping in touch. There are at least one and a half million people signing up each day and according to statistics, the Facebook website has been growing at a rate of 100% since its inception by a Harvard graduate in early 2004. In the US, it is the largest photo-sharing site, ahead of even Flickr. The Power Of Facebook An easy-to-navigate site, a simple sign up, the facility to invite friends, the “marketplace”, applications platform, are all the hallmarks of Facebook. When you signup and create your account, you can invite all your friends directly by importing their email addresses from your Gmail, Hotmail, AOL and Yahoo address list. Within seconds, you can invite everyone you know to Facebook. There are no conventional forms where you must manually invite five friends. This effective viral marketing approach is a major advantage. Although Facebook was initially conceived exclusively for Harvard students, today anyone can sign up. It has become a neat meeting place for people of any age and status, enabling them connect with their contacts on a common platform. Initially the focus of the site was on High school and college students. Today, around 30000 institutions are recognized by Facebook and as many as ninety percent of the registered members log into their account on a daily basis! It is hardly surprising that Facebook, in terms of traffic is the 7th largest according to statistics in the US. If you look at a typical member profile on Facebook, you’ll find information regarding status, friends, networks, photos, etc. The biggest USP of Facebook is its photo feature. As a user you can upload as many photos as you want and share them with your friends. You can control who can see these pictures and who comments on them. Facebook Groups And Events Another great feature on Facebook that makes it powerful is it allows you to create groups and join existing groups. You can choose to display your group on your profile, letting you expand your network faster. There is also the facility of forming private groups that are useful to students to get together on specific projects and communicate. With the ‘events’ feature, members can plan and organize events, which can be useful for parties, meetings, etc. As one of the most successful social ‘utility’ networks, Facebook is all set for continued rapid growth.
