Penalty Kick In Football

The penalty kick is a very important part of the game of football. There can be two scenarios, in which the penalty shootout is awarded to a team. First, when a team commits one of the ten specified offences, another team gets the chance to score goals through penalty shoot. Second, when both the teams score equal number of goals in the ninety minutes of the game, the extra time for penalty shootout is awarded for both the teams. The team that gets to score more goals in this penalty shootout wins the match.

The Procedure To Perform Penalty Kicks

As per the procedure to perform the penalty kicks in football, first, the referee places the ball on the penalty mark. The players who will attempt the penalty shoots are properly identified. The goalkeeper takes his or her place at the goalpost to defend the ball. The position of the goalkeeper remains there on the goal line. He or she must be facing the penalty striker. As soon as the ball is kicked, the goalie can jump or do whatever he or she can do to defend the ball. However, meanwhile all the players other than the defending goalie and the penalty striker have to stand inside the football field but outside the penalty area. Their exact position of these players is just behind the penalty mark, which must be at least ten yards away.

The Role Of The Referee

It is the referee of the football match, who has the authority to judge the offences made by a team and award the other team the opportunity of penalty kick. The referee has to make sure that all the players have taken their respective position as required by the football rules, before signaling the striker to attempt the penalty kick. Usually, the signal comes in the form of a whistle. As soon as the referee signals the striker to take the attempt, the striker kicks the ball forward. Here, you should note that the penalty shooter does not get a second chance to kick the ball until it has touched another player.

• However, after striking the ball¸ if the ball touches an outside agent, the referee stops the play and asks the striker to retake the kick.

• Likewise, if the striker touches the ball a second time, before another player touches the ball, the referee awards an indirect free kick to the opponent team right from the point where the infringement took place.

• Similarly, the referee can ask the penalty kick to be retaken, if any player from any of the team infringes the laws of football.
