The Importance Of Warm Up Before A Football Match

Whether the players are going for a training session or for a real football match, it is important for the coach to make them go through a short but effective warm up session. Football has always been a very competitive sport and a proper warm up readies the players to be in the groove when they enter the match situation. Following are some of the best components that you must include during football warm up sessions:

Greetings

As soon as the players arrive, greet each of them. The only thing that you can do at this moment when the football match is going to start in a few minutes is to say something to the players to motivate them. However, you must note that whatever you say, it should not be for more than thirty seconds and should be less than three or four lines.

Running

It is good to start by having your players run around the field. In order to make the running more fun, you may also like to have them play a tag or relay game, such as juggling in small groups, Frisbee etc. The purpose should be to lessen the stress of going for the big football match.

Stretching

Stretching is a good component of warm ups on a football match day. It is always better to allow the captain of your team to run the stretching warm up. What is more, do not forget to pat some of the players, if not each, on their back as a symbol of offering encouragement.

Practice touches on the ball

It is very important for the coach to develop these warm up sessions in a way that should allow the players to have more and more touches on the ball. However, it does not mean the touches of the ball by feet only. It includes all sorts of touches, such as heading, volleying, trapping, settling etc.

Practice Passing the Ball in Small Groups

Passing exercise is another important component of the warm up sessions, before the big football matches. It could be one touch passing exercise, you may like to involve all the players of the team collectively with three, or four balls, in order to practice passing the ball to each other.

Practicing Small Sided Games

If you have time, you may like to make your players practice some small-sided games, before going for the real football match. You may use cones or players as goalpost.

Time to Cool Down

It is very important for the coaches to allow some time to let the players cool down. This will speed up the recovery process. The stage of cooling down may include more stretching, light running or some easy movements.
