• If the referee notices any sort of infringement of laws of the game, he or she has the power to stop, suspend or even terminate the match at his own discretion. He can also do so in case there is some outside interference in the game, such as hullabaloo from the audience.

• The referee has also the power to stop the match for a certain time if a player is injured seriously.

• The referee is also the authority to penalize the players against any foul play or misconduct during the game. He or she may give yellow or even red cards to the players as a disciplinary action. The yellow card in football sends the player outside the field for a certain period of time while the red card sends the player outside the field for rest of the game.

• It is also the duty of the referee to make sure that no unauthorized person is entering the field.

• The referee is the authority to stop and restart the match, as applicable.

• Sometimes, when the referee does not see an incident, he is free to take decisions on the advice of the assistant referees or the fourth official.
