Holiday Gifts
Holiday gifts add an extra dimension to the holiday season. Almost any holiday can be used as a time for gift exchange although some holidays pretty much demand holiday gifts. Other holidays don't traditionally include gift giving, but the addition of holiday gifts is a special one. Holiday gifts often carry with them the theme of the holiday, such as stuffed plush toy rabbits at Easter and heart-shaped boxes full of chocolates at Valentine's Day. orange and black dyed carnations in Halloween flower arrangements and bottles of wine packaged in boxes with foil embossed holly leaves and berries. But holiday gifts go way beyond these simple, traditional type tokens. Holidays like Christmas have been so overblown in terms of gifts that the holiday can be overwhelming with shopping and expensive gift purchases. A few generations ago, the Christmas season was so much about the warmth and love of holiday and some special baking and singing together with family and neighbors. Yes there were Christmas holiday gifts, but they were more often one gift given and one received. Everyone who was privileged and less privileged might have one or two holiday gifts and that was that. There was still anticipation and excitement associated with the holiday gifts, but not for excess... In these times of mass consumerism, holiday gifts at Christmas and other holidays has gotten quite out of hand. There are households that spend thousands and thousands of dollars for literally piles of gifts that surround the Christmas tree. These holiday gifts are extravagant and abundant. Sometimes the pile of holiday gifts spread out in a mountain that reaches far into the living room and is often three and four gifts high. Santa doesn't bring one present for each child anymore! He leaves a room full of presents. This is probably unique to the American culture, but that is only a suspicion. Holiday gifts, when chosen with care or handmade with love send a wonderful message to the recipient and don't bankrupt the giver. Children supplying their parents with gift lists at the holidays that could choke a horse is not really the fulfilling spirit of any holiday season. Sure, get the children the things they need and give those things as they need them. Why include those items in a pile that just tires the child out and teaches the child about excess. Why doesn't everyone tone down the emphasis on holiday gifts to one or two truly special items that will be memorable instead of watching chaos and hysteria take over the holiday and entire gifts getting lost in the heap of gift wrapping that gets stuffed into garbage bags and set out on the curb to be gone and forgotten?
