Although it might seem that most people want to be at home with family for the holidays, in order to be with family, sometimes holiday travel is required. Sometimes holiday travel is designed just as a vacation that happens to occur at holiday time. In this case, you might be using the free time around a given holiday as an opportunity to travel since often people are given time off from work for the holidays. And in other cases, the holiday itself occurs at exactly the time of year when travel is most appropriate for certain activities and it just makes good sense to do some traveling during that holiday period. Some examples of the latter situation would be for North Americans who like the beach, to travel on or around the time of the Labor Day holiday. This is the first Monday of September and usually marks the end of the summer season and for many people, the last opportunity to go to the beach, lake or mountains for the end of the season. Many will use this holiday travel time to put up their boats until the following May or June when another holiday, Memorial Day, marks the beginning of the swimming boating, camping season for the next year. So typically, these two holidays are huge ones for holiday travel. Holiday travel that is geared for the Christmas season is often chosen because of timing. Since schools are usually closed for an extended period, families can plan holiday travel for a week or more and is often one of the favorite times for holiday travel. Thanksgiving is another holiday when there is a great number of travelers either on the road or in the air. People who are trying to get to a relative's house for reunion and celebration for the holiday. Thanksgiving in the U.S. has always felt like a time to return home to be with family so it makes great sense to do your holiday travel at Thanksgiving. Now three of the four holidays sited above are particular to the United States. So holiday travel will likely be very different for different countries in different parts of the world. Traditions around holiday travel may be completely different in other places and might be motivated by and designed for lots of other reasons. Holiday travel might mean taking a walking pilgrimage or a retreat that has nothing to do with family or recreational activities. And this type of holiday travel is possible in the U.S. as well, but not as well known or widely practiced as the holiday travel mentioned earlier.
