Holiday Treats

Holiday treats are something that most of us look forward to as any holiday is approaching. Holiday treats are usually referring to special foods, snacks, desserts, beverages and even entire meals. Holiday treats are often given as gifts and are most certainly served to not only family, but also guests as entertaining around the holidays is very common. Holiday treats can be unique to you and your family or they can be of a more universal variety. Holiday treats are not just sweet and salty bits of food, they can be seasonal fruits as well. So just because you are indulging in the wonderful flavors of holiday treats doesn't mean you are eating things that are hot good for your health. There is certainly a balance to be found between holiday treats that are all empty calories and holiday treats that are essential to a good diet.

Holiday treats are often found in stores and are packaged specifically for the holidays. Take for instance, Egg Nog. It is usually packaged in a carton with some Christmasy or wintery holly or something like that to indicate it is for the holidays. And Egg Nog is something that is usually not found in stores at other times of the year. The same is true for King Cakes as a holiday treat. King Cakes are only made and marketed for Mardi Gras which culminates on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. These King Cakes, the majority of which are made in bakeries in and around New Orleans, can be shipped anywhere. (in the states anyway) and are a twisted coffee cake with a hidden tiny plastic baby inside, (about an inch long) and iced and decorated with the three traditional colors of Mardi Gras, green, gold and purple. The tradition with the holiday treat, the King Cake and the baby is that whoever gets the piece of cake with the baby contained it, has to host the next King Cake party!

Some products that are common holiday treats are available year round, but a special version of them are produced for specific holidays. Some of these treats are, M&M's. They are green and red at Christmas and pastel colored at Easter. Candy corn and the assorted candies like candy corn that are shaped like pumpkins and black cats are marketed at Halloween. And the holiday treats like peppermint candy canes and chocolate rabbits are available at Christmas and Easter only. And finally assorted chocolates that are available in the traditional rectangular boxes all year round are packaged in heart shaped boxes for Valentine's day.

But some healthier holiday treats that are wonderful and traditional are caramel apples in the fall for Halloween and Thanksgiving season, although, they are also associated with the summer boardwalk, state fairs and carnivals and now even available at malls at a special candied apple stand. Pumpkin pie is another holiday treat, that although sweet, it is a pretty healthy food with pumpkin and eggs, milk and spices. And what could be a healthier holiday treat than the roasted pumpkin seeds that you bake in the oven after you have cleaned and carved your Halloween Jack-O-Lantern? Well there is almost no end to the assortment of holiday treats. Even if it is a food or drink that others don't consider to be a holiday treat, if you and yours have made it a tradition for a certain holiday, then for you, it is a holiday treat.
