Holidays
Holidays are special days. They can be recognized by many people for many reasons or by one person for no reason at all except as a reason to celebrate. Holidays are often created for the purpose of honoring a person or an event. Sometimes holidays are created because the person has died and was someone who made major contributions to a group or society and in memory of that person, a holiday was named. sometimes that holiday is on or around the birthday of that individual. Sometimes it takes place on the anniversary of the death of the individual. An important event, whether good or unfortunate is another reason for naming and giving a special date to celebrate that event in order to remember it. If the event was long lasting, then perhaps the date of celebration is the day the event began or the day it ended and in some cases, the holiday lasts the entire period of the event and occurs every year in celebration or remembrance of the event. There are other holidays that have been created that center around groups or places or causes. Throughout the years, people have found endless reasons to create holidays. Although some holidays are serious and for great reason, many modern holidays, it seems, have been started for commercial reasons only. Huge industries survive on holidays. Greeting cards, candy companies, manufacturers of different products, specialty foods and decorations are all at the center of the success and perpetuation and creation of holidays. It is difficult to imagine and take seriously some of the many holidays that seem frivolous and seem to exist for the sole reason to sell stuff. Of course, it is not mandatory to recognize or celebrate all or any of the holidays that may be listed on calendars and even recognized by governments. At this time, we are free to choose whether or not to take part in a holiday observance with the exception that when official businesses are closed on certain holidays as that limits access to that business or its services because it is observing the holiday. In these cases, there are drawbacks and benefits to the holiday's existence. For instance, government holidays that require certain places to be closed allows many workers a day off from their job and that is a good thing. Everyone can use a day off now and then. But on the down side, when these places are closed, goods and services are denied to everyone whether you want to celebrate that holiday or not. Holiday celebrations usually include special preparations. Food planning, gift giving and for many, increasing personal debt. Some of the big holidays, like religious holidays are observed by a portion of the population from all over the globe. And some holidays are celebrated on a regional basis, depending on location and holiday, this may also involve a general shut-down of business for a period to observe the holiday. Holidays can have a party atmosphere or they can demand a somber atmosphere. Holidays are a part of all of our lives and most of us have memories of holidays from our earliest memories as a small child and continue to our last days.
