There are several items that have become symbols for the Thanksgiving holiday in the U.S. One is the turkey. The wild turkey was abundant in the wilderness back in the days of the pilgrims and those turkeys could fly. Now there are huge turkey farms where millions of flightless turkeys are bred to prepare for the Thanksgiving holiday. Over forty five million turkeys are eaten on any given Thanksgiving holiday. School children participate in Thanksgiving pageant plays at school dressing up in costumes as Pilgrims, Indians, turkeys and trees. Homecoming football games are played at high schools all over the country and many reunions take place over that weekend since alumni are very likely to be in the area visiting family. Thanksgiving is a holiday that consists of a four day weekend so there is time for lots of travel to relative's home for the big celebration. Since Thanksgiving is one of the few national holidays that still falls on the set day each year, although the date changes, the day doesn't, always the fourth Thursday of November, but it was originally a different day until President Roosevelt changed it in order to lengthen the Christmas holiday shopping season. The famous Indian, Squanto who was the last survivor of his tribe met the Pilgrims in 1622 and was part of the first Thanksgiving holiday feast. Thanksgiving is a holiday that was intended as a celebration of the harvest. Squanto helped the pilgrims learn how to cultivate corn, using fish and manure as fertilizer and he showed them where to catch fish and eels and he was their interpreter and guide.
